What's the Best School Day of the Year?

    Reblog

Although I am a teacher, I'm thinking back to when I was a kid to answer this.

Now you'd think that this was a very easy question to answer. Of course the last day of school is the best school day of the year. No more dealing with those stupid teachers who just want to yap away while you are trying to play Mad Libs with your friend next to you. Or, if you are a total nerd who loves school, maybe the first day of school is the best school day of the year. To be fair, school is a really great place to socialize and I have even heard some people think learning is fun, but neither of those answers are correct.

The best day of the school year is... any SNOW DAY!!!!!

Oh my God! Probably the best thing about growing up in the Chicago area was the possibility that at any time between October 1st and April 30th, you could be surprised with the ultimate gift and child could receive. No it is not an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time (but I do hear that is better than a football). The greatest gift a kid was receive was a phone call before dawn that ended with your mom saying, "There is no school today because of the snow."

For some reason she never seemed as excited as I was to get this glorious news. Maybe that is why she stopped answering the phone until we were gone for school. But that is OK, this allowed us to play the most incredible interactive TV game ever created. Back in the 1980s, you could turn on channel 9 and they would scroll the names of school closing across the bottom of the screen. If you couldn't wait for that, you could always check out a handy dandy transistor radio tuned to an AM station that would read the list to you.

We would sit glued to the TV until we saw those glorious words, "District 67 is closed."

I will never forget how awesome snow days were when I was a kid. Back then, before the earth had decided we had fucked it up so much that it should randomly warm and cool at inconvenient times, there really was a chance that on any given day during the winter we would get a bonus day off. I still contest there is no finer feeling than a sixth grader waking up on a random Tuesday to find that they had nothing to do that day... and there was freaking snow on the ground!

Now obviously with so much snow on the ground that a school couldn't possibly open, all we could do is sit alone in our house and weep for the day we could return to school. Wrong! The first thing we did was go to walk to the school parking lot that was filled with snow. There we would either climb on the giant mountains of plowed snow and throw sow and ice at each other or we would play tackle football on the snow covering the cement parking lot. Or if you were lucky enough to have a straight, tall slide, you could take a sled and put it on the slide and then crash into the snow at the bottom. If you happen to know some smart older kids, they could build a bump of snow at the bottom of the slide for you to use as a ramp. The only thing more prevalent than broken arms on those days was the screams of joy from all the kids.

And then, after the snow had soaked through your shoes (never boots) socks, elastic on the wrists of the arms on your coat, your scarf, and basically everything, you'd run home, throw all of that wet shit right in the middle of the floor and bust out Jungle Hunt on your Atari 2600. Oh and did I mention all of your buddies come with and toss their wet shit all over too? I'm pretty sure that is the closest to heaven I have ever or will ever be.

So can any of you top a snow day as the

    best day of the year?

Ah yes, I remember Jungle Hunt! Snow days used to be so awesome when I was a kid but now that I am an adult, it is just another day!

To be honest, I hadn't thought about it that way. In my country, we don't see snow; we practically have sun all year round. But thinking about it makes me want to visit any place where I can feel it and play in it (snow). It's one of my dreams that I still have to fulfill, so I'm happy, as you said, with the last day of classes. Besides, knowing we had to go to another school gave us a feeling of nostalgia and, at the same time, of facing the challenges ahead.

Although this phrase from your post isn't out of place if someone wants to give us that rifle:

No, it's not an official Red Ryder air rifle, a carbine-action rifle with a 200-shot capacity, a compass in the stock, and that device that tells the time (although I've heard it's better than a soccer ball).

This beings smile to me. Not the privilege of having snow around but such unexpected school off always brings joy to us in our childhood. Rather than staying we get ourself on the grounds playing cricket. Ahh..I miss those days now.

Without a doubt, a few days off from school because of the snow would be incredible, and it would be very difficult to even begin to describe how amazing it could be. That feeling of not going to school when I was younger was exciting, but now that I'm older, I feel like I missed out on those days to complete my education. That's why now, not with my own children, but with my grandchildren, I help them as much as I can with their homework, giving them the opportunity that, for various reasons, we didn't have or didn't want.

You’re 100% right. The first day of school is okay, and the last day is great, but a Snow Day is a miracle.

Haha snow days must have been fun... Here we never really had big snow days and schools never closed even one day for snow, rain, storm etc...

The best day for me was the last day of school in summer, that meant long holidays and beach time!

Getting through a day without school because of the snow is tough, but when I was a student, not going to school for any reason was amazing. Although I always enjoyed going because it was close to home and we got out at midday, so I personally always loved going and playing with my friends.

I always hated school (purely because my brain just didn't function with it, no bad experiences) so all of the term last days and any public holidays and [pupil free days were the best. We had no chance of snow days where I'm from or where I am now XD

I don't think I have anything that can top that; I'm not terribly sociable so most days off if I wasn't out with friends for a couple of hours (most of the time we were riding or skating around the school or climbing trees or exploring places we weren't supposed to be, probably a good thing we were enough aware of the dangers of large machinery to not die/be severly injured in the minesites we were not supposed to be haunting) I was at home reading and/or writing or sometimes gaming.

I remember my dad telling me that "school days are the best days of your life" and I thoroughly disagreed with him all the way up to my thirties when I eventually worked out that maybe he was referring to that particular age of childhood where you had not much in the way of responsibilities and could mostly do whatever in which case I can agree with him.

Okay. First day for me, am kinda nervous and last day am happy. We don't have snow. But the best day for me as of then is when that bully didn't show up in school that day.

Yes, one of the best school days is the last day of school, but I have to say that I have also two others...The first is when we went on a trip. I remember how I couldn't sleep because I was so excited to go with my class. Another favorite day was also the last day of school before winter break. The school always organized a dance, and if I recall correctly, classes only lasted about four hours before we went to have fun...dancing, singing, with snow outside. It's interesting that I still remember these feelings even though it was 25 years ago. Thanks for this article...it was nice to look back a little :) Oh, and school was never closed. It was a lot of snow, but it was still possible to go…especially me. I was living just a minute away from school 😂
