Does being a good person pay off in the end? Does being a good person make your life better?
In a world where people lie and cheat their way through life, under the guise of being smart, and cool, does honesty and a good name pay?
This post was triggered by an event that played out in my friend’s office.
In the last four months, three of my friends colleagues resigned. By resigning, I mean handing in their resignation letters, agreeing to give the company one month's notice, but disappearing in no time. This is against company policy as you are expected to give the company a month's notice to get a replacement or you either forfeit your salary for the month or pay the company back for leaving abruptly.
These three people waited till they were paid and left. This policy is bound by law and as such, the company has every right to penalize them for breaking it, and for some reason, they didn't. They all left, not giving a hoot about the company or whatever they did. In their books, they were so smart and were proud enough to boast about how they ran the company "street".
Four months later my friend got a federal job and was asked to resume immediately without prior notice. She informed the HRM that she wouldn't be able to stay for the stipulated one month but could do two weeks only in the next month, she begged the company to work around the payment structure so she doesn't forego all her salary for the month, guess what? The company refused, and my friend wasn't paid a penny for that month.
My question is…does honesty really pay? Is there any reward for playing by the books in our society? Don't get me wrong, I understand that rules are rules and nobody runs a business with emotions and sentiments, but then again, shouldn't honesty be applauded sometimes? Shouldn't we recognize such a trait sometimes?
Three people decided to run the company "street", but one person was brave enough to come clean from the get-go, damning the consequences but nothing happened.
Don't get it twisted, the company was correct in every sense, company policies are there to ensure the smooth running of the company, but I wish the story were different, I wish they were able to show her a teeny tiny mercy.
Her colleagues kept blaming her for doing the right thing, they kept mentioning all the tricks she would have played to get her money and resign in peace and of course, the stories of the three people who absconded were recounted over and over again.
You see, people insult and laugh at people with strong moral values. They see them at weaklings, people who have no balls and are pushovers.
Just the way people celebrate con artists and liars. I wish the world would recognize and celebrate good, and honest people because not so many are out there anymore.
