Red shouldered hawk

On Thursday I got up at 6AM and fed the dying cat and then the woodstoves. I got my post up and then started working up shopping orders for 3 stores. This took most of the morning, between stops to feed the stoves. I got the shades up at 8AM and went back to the orders.

I got a call just after 11:30AM asking if my #4 helper could come early for 12:15PM. I had just finished the orders so I got busy getting the first load in the dishwasher.

I wasn’t ready for the day yet when she arrived. She reminded me I hadn’t given her a tour of the house when she came last week. We had just started right on the Christmas tree. So we did that and then she got the first floor vacuumed. By the time she finished it was time to go pick up all the orders I’d made.

I got a shower and ready for the day when she left. I was putting wood in the wood stove when I heard this big BANG on the office door. I grabbed the camera and sure enough. The red shouldered hawk had gone after a bird in the South garden and hit the door when it caught it.

It ended up in the snow on the other side of the porch railing, having left its mangled catch on the doorstep. It flew up to the roof to recover and that was how I was able to get the nice photo with the old camera.

It never did come back for its catch. Sigh…

She got back with all the shopping just before 4PM and we got it all put away. She was fascinated with the National Geographic collection and had found “her” issue. People like finding the issue that came out the month and year they were born.

She kept saying, “It makes me feel so old!” But she liked looking at the ads for film cameras and such.

When she left, I got the stoves going and sat down to watch 800 Words. I went to bed at 8:30PM. I hadn’t been able to get the masonry heater up to temp so it would be cold in the morning.

Friday is to be sunny but still very cold. I have exercise class in the morning and my #3 helper comes at 12:30PM. I have to finish cleaning up the kitchen and I’m hoping we can finally finish the elderberry cleaning and I can get 2 of my bowls back.

Great shot of the hawk! I'm sure it will shake it off and catch another bird. Do you order online and have your helper pick them up? or do they take a list and do the shopping themselves?

I order online because the stores not longer accept checks and the workers aren’t allowed to use our debit cards.

I can't believe that both of us had Hawks on the same day going after the birds at the feeder. Crazy! I couldn't get a good photo with my phone though and it was snowing so hard too. We are getting 8 more inches this weekend. Geeze!

We’re supposed to have a near miss from the blizzard that’s going to whack the Cape. Guess we’ll find out…
