My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is Brand Nubian from the band of the same name: Brand Nubian.
This isn't the first time, and it certainly won't be the last, that I've brought up a topic related to one of the genres I've enjoyed the most in recent years. I'm talking about hip-hop, which I listened to during my teenage years thanks to the influence of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and its multiplayer mode. Back then, I spent hours role-playing as a truck driver, and on those trips I would listen to the game's radio stations, which had an impressive variety of musical genres from before the 2000s.
At that time, I ended up developing a bit of a fondness for hip-hop, but the truth is that I hadn't really immersed myself in it that much. It wasn't until a few years later, when I saw a movie that would change my mind: Straight Outta Compton. Now I had begun to immerse myself completely in the genre, where I started looking for new artists to listen to: Nas, Eric B., Rakim, Ludacris, Outkast, Eazy-E, 50 Cent, and many more. And in the midst of that journey, if there's one thing to highlight, it's that I realized that what I like most about rap is the instrumental. For that reason, it's no mystery that my favorite artist in the genre is the best producer: Dr. Dre.
A couple of days ago, I was going through a Spotify playlist that contained all the songs from GTA SA, and this Brand Nubian track came up. The truth is that it brings back a lot of nostalgia for when I used to play it as a kid, and on top of that, it has a really cool instrumental.
Brand Nubian is a hip hop group from New Rochelle, New York. It was formed in the late 1980s and consisted of artists such as Grand Puba, Sadat X, Lord Jamar, and DJ Alamo. Their debut album was One for All, released on December 4, 1990. The album featured songs such as All for One, Slow Down, and Wake Up, which were among the best known of that period and helped them make a name for themselves.
The song Brand Nubian is part of the successful album One for All and also ended up appearing on Playback FM radio in GTA San Andreas. The huge success of Grand Theft AutoSan Andreas gave the song and the group enormous visibility.
