We enjoyed a nice long hike around Lynx Lake and the neighboring Homestead Trail today to pack in almost 6 miles of wonderful exercise in the Prescott National Forest.

We woke early enough for our customary morning walk. Some days Lulu is ready to roll before I have had a chance to drink my coffee and today was one of those days (I guess she knew we were going for a ride somewhere). A couple of dog walkers from the nearby humane society shelter were out and all our dogs had a good time socializing while we strolled. There were already several cars at the Northside parking area and people were out along the lakeshore enjoying the beautiful and mild winter day. We headed out along the easy and flat paved trail running along the west shoreline. The lake level remains very low almost a year after the Forest Service drained a good deal of water to repair drainage valves at the damp. Plenty of birds were out and it was great to see lots of jays and finches in the trees. Lulu was cruising along so we moved along at a good pace. After reaching the southshore parking area and headed uphill to join up with the Homestead Trail which runs for several miles between the road and Lynx Creek and the lake. The narrow trail wound around through the forest with the tall pine trees towering over use. Lulu was happy to trot along in front of me so these 3 mules went along quite nicely and the forest was quite quiet except for the occasional bird or distant automobile. We arrived back at the trailhead a bit tired but happy and Lulu enjoyed a nice treat and bowl of water while I rested.
