Midge orchid promise in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP: February 2 2026

Start the day wrestling the start of a cold. My wife has been sick a few days though she did go to work this morning. Got in the car to to an orchid walk. Changed my mind on the way out as to where to go. Stopped at Murrua Road entrance to Ku-ring Gai Chase NP. These things happen for a reason

The reason: bumped into friends as I got to start my walk. They had already done their walk but not seen any orchids. A short 50 metres down the trail they had not walked produced orchids - seeded fringed midge orchid

One budding close by as we chatted

A little further on was one flower open. They flower from the bottom - one flower open. This orchid has a flappy labellum - happy to get a shot of the tiny labellum in focus

    Zoomed in - corunastylis fimbriatus

NSW coral heath flower - epacris pulchella

A few milkwort flowers start a bit of a purple theme

    Purple fan flower

Whenever I see the fan flowers, I look for the fringe lilies. Did find some

In fact found a lot under the powerlines. Double header here

A few more in frame. No luck finding cryptostylis hunteriana in a known spot. Giving up hope on this spot - only ever found once

Did find one budding midge orchid - maybe different to the others

A pale version of the purple fringe lily - more violet than purple

Banksia flowers just starting - a conical form

    A more rounded form

Stepped back photo of pine-leafed geebung across the track

Confused on ID for this. Always thought the pink made it eriostemon - some say leptospermum squarrosum

Mini flannel flower - aconitiflorus minor

Another chance on ID - checked the ID - the Latin name is leptospermum squarrosum. The English name has the word peach in it.

The cold is getting to me. Did take a nap to try shake it off. Does not often happen.

Sure hope I can get over this cold. Got stuff to do. Did the shopping in what was our local shopping centre before we moved. Was crowded and horrid. Not going back there again.
