It's my first poem; who knew writing these could be so fun and profound at the same time?
Have you ever been in a situation where you meet someone, and you are instantly drawn to them, maybe because they are attractive, but when you go to talk to them, you realise you were sorely mistaken?
My poem, as the title says, critiques and challenges the cliché "Love at first sight" narrative. It can only be love at first sight if beyond looks, you actually connect in other ways as well.
But what happens when the "sight" draws you in, only for you to realise that they're not really your type of person?
What does this mean? I'm glad you asked.
Love at first conversation. You can only truly know a person by having a conversation with them. I mean, you won't even get to know their name if they don't open their mouths and tell you, right?
A conversation opens you up to a world of understanding this person beyond their looks. It allows you to form an idea of who they are, based on their verbal and non-verbal cues.
You get to learn their likes and dislikes, their values and character, their level of education, and even their hobbies. And based on these, you get to decide if their life mirrors one that is compatible with yours.
The poem resonates with me because, although they are quite rare, there are individuals I have met that, in the first conversation, I know I want to talk to them again and again.
And they usually feel the same way towards me. It's that instant connection. It often presents as them laughing at that one joke you tell that nobody else seems to get.
Or them understanding the way you express yourself without you having to over explain or edit yourself. In those moments, you take a step back and properly look at this person who seems to get you in areas no one has been able to.
And your heart smiles. You are suddenly pushed to explore this connection more, and love grows.
It's beautiful when these moments happen
