Wholesome Gestures and More

Some days back, there was a video circulating, where someone interviewed a struggling young boy. The boy’s story was so touching, that before he even finished telling the story, I found myself withholding tears. Apparently, the boy had given up formal education, to learn a skill at the age of 10. And since he had no resources to get the tools he needed to start working, he ventured into picking up recyclable items from the street. This was how he met the interviewer who not only gave him hope but changed his life for the better. The amount of people who came through for him, after that interview, was proof of humanity still abounding in the world.

That day, I wasn’t feeling particularly happy due to how my day had turned out so far, but coming across that post erased everything I had been feeling. The tears he shed in appreciation, his shocked reaction and his gestures, came together to make me feel way better than I did before. When it comes to the act of giving, I can’t begin to emphasize how it impacts you just as much as it impacts the receiver. The smile on their faces, the relief, the joy or the pleasure, all these are just as rewarding as that gift you gave the receiver.

That young boy will never forget how humanity came through for him at a time he didn’t expect. And the same, goes for many others who have been receivers of these gestures. As humans, there’s the need to feel seen at a point in life, and watching this young boy get the opportunity to achieve things he’s only ever dreamed of, was wholesome.

If there’s one thing that never fails to enhance my mood, it’s always been seeing others happy. Sharing items, helping people, complimenting people, all these are things that make me happy. I don’t always have to be the giver. Being an onlooker, or simply being present when something like that happens, is enough to put me in my feels. I’ve had this experience countless times, that even in times where I wasn’t feeling happy nor sad, i am automatically transported to a state of bliss.

There are other things of course that’ll take my mood from 0 to a 100. Hearing from my favorite people after a hectic day or after a long while, eating my favorite meals to my fullest, coming across hilarious content, receiving compliments from strangers, simple gestures of love, are enough to make my mood skyrocket. Apart from food related matters, I’ve never been one to focus on quantity. Doing something for someone has always been because I wanted to. The same for receiving. The amount of thoughtfulness that goes into these actions, is what actually influences my mood.
