Lately, I've been giving Netflix miniseries a chance. I feel that because they are much shorter and don't require long seasons, the story combines many factors that make it much more enjoyable, as each episode is much more polished than having to maintain the same quality indefinitely.
One of the miniseries I've seen and loved was Sandokan. Can Yaman plays a pirate who is different from the rest. He's not ruthless like any pirate we can imagine, but he is very skilled with his swords and leadership. Together with his crew, he embarks on new adventures, which always end up being chaotic.
Últimamente le estoy dando la oportunidad a las miniseries de Netflix. Tengo la impresión de que al ser mucho más cortas, y que no requiere de temporadas extensas, la historia combina muchos factores que hacen que la disfrutes mucho más, ya que cada capítulo sale mucho más pulido que tener que mantener la misma calidad indefinidamente.
Una de las miniseries que he visto y puedo decir que me encantó fue Sandokán. Can Yaman personifica un pirata que se diferencia del resto. No es despiadado como cualquier pirata que imaginemos, pero sí muy habilidoso con sus espadas y dirección de mando. Junto a sus tripulantes, se embarcará a nuevas aventuras, que siempre terminan en ser caóticas.
What I like about this miniseries is that death is not portrayed as brutal, but rather as something spontaneous, like being stabbed with a sword and dying instantly; there is no agony, nor is there any attempt to disturb the viewer. Similarly, if someone is thrown into the sea, it is assumed that they have died rather than that they are drowning. The miniseries seems to focus on these nuances, which makes it much more entertaining, without requiring any bloody additions.
The secondary characters really represent the unity of the pirates. Each one has a story to tell, or where they come from and how they became friends. That's something the plot develops over the eight episodes. I can assure you that there is also enough spice to make you grow fond of these characters, or at least feel some empathy when you see what happens to them. The feelings are there, and sometimes they manage to be reflected very faithfully, so I assure you that you will shed a few tears.
Lo que me gusta de esta miniserie es que la muerte no se la refleja con bestialidad, sino que es más bien algo espontáneo, como recibir un espadazo y morir en el acto; no hay agonía o no se pretende perturbar al espectador. Al igual que si arrojan a alguien al mar, ya se asume que murió y no que se está ahogando. La miniserie parece enfocarse en estos matices, lo que hace que se vea mucho más entretenida, sin requerir del un agregado sangriento.
Los personajes secundarios en realidad representan mucho la unión de los piratas. Cada uno tiene una historia que contar, o de dónde provienen y como se hicieron amigos. Eso es algo que la trama desarrolla a lo largo de los 8 episodios. Puedo asegurar que también hay condimentos suficientes como para encariñarte con estos personajes, o al menos, sentir algo de empatía al ver lo que les sucede. Los sentimientos están ahí, y a veces logran ser reflejados con mucha fidelidad, por lo que te aseguro que soltarás algunas lágrimas.
The plot revolves around the adventures of Sandokan, a Malaysian pirate known as “The Tiger of Malaysia” who, together with his crew (and especially his friend Yanez, of Portuguese origin), attacks ships on the high seas, setting sail from their island of Mompracem. However, during one of the attacks on a ship, he encounters the enemy crew of the Sultan of Brunei, unleashing a desperate struggle for survival. Then, as fate would have it, he meets a beautiful lady who is none other than the daughter of the British consul, with whom he falls completely in love, leading to a series of conflicts. The attraction between the two becomes intense, but it is impossible not to mention that they are souls from two completely different, opposing worlds.
The plot also invites us to discover other objectives that were not contemplated, such as the liberation of slaves by the British, which accentuates how colonialism was carried out, when pirates were branded as beasts. In this context, the liberation of these hostages (indigenous people known as the Dayak) is another issue to discuss, but if achieved, it is very satisfying to see. Especially because one of the people is the one who believed in him and sensed that he was the person who would bring peace and liberation to his people. During the plot, Sandokan will find his roots in a way that is quite challenging to see.
La trama trata sobre las aventuras de Sandokán, un pirata malayo conocido como "El tigre de Malasia" que, junto a su tripulación (y en especial su amigo Yañez, de origen portugués), realizan ataques a barcos en altamar, partiendo de su isla de Mompracem. Sin embargo, en uno de los asaltos a un barco se logra encontrar con la tripulación enemiga del Sultán de Brunéi, desatándose una situación desesperante de supervivencia. Luego, por cosa del destino, conoce a una bella dama que no sería ni más ni menos que la hija del cónsul británico, de la que se enamorará completamente, acarreando consigo una gran serie de conflictos. La atracción entre ambos se vuelve intensa, pero no es posible no mencionar que son almas de dos mundos distintos, completamente contrapuestos.
También la trama invita a descubrir realizar otros objetivos que no estaban contemplados, como la liberación de esclavos por parte de los británicos, que acentúan cómo se llevaban a cabo los pasos del colonialismo, cuando se los tildaba de bestias a los piratas. En este contexto, la liberación de estos rehenes (indígenas conocidos como los Dayak) es otro tema que discutir, pero que de lograrse, es muy satisfactorio de ver. Sobre todo porque una de las personas es la que creyó en él e intuía que era la persona que devolvería la paz y liberación a su pueblo. Durante la trama, Sandokán encontrará las raíces de un modo que resulta bastante desafiante de ver.
The story combines epic adventures, jungle battles, battles at sea (with cannon fire), battles in mining areas, but there is also a confrontation over passion for a woman. Without a doubt, it is a whole package that, together with the soundtrack and variety of environments, makes the experience very enjoyable.
This is a modern adaptation, but there are others that are older and worth exploring when you have time. Seeing as it's a good production, I highly recommend it.
La historia combina aventuras épicas, combates en la jungla, en altamar (con disparos de cañones), combates en zonas mineras, pero también hay ese enfrentamiento por la pasión por una mujer. Sin dudas es todo un conjunto que, junto a la banda sonora y variedad de entornos, hacen que la experiencia sea muy disfrutable.
Ésta es una adaptación actual, pero hay otras que son antiguas y que tocará explorarlas cuando haya tiempo. Viendo que ha sido una buena producción, la recomiendo totalmente.
