I remember seeing Alejandro Amenábar's film Tesis in the late 1990s, which I really liked, and this filmmaker, also young at the time, was emerging as a promising figure in Spanish cinema. He continued to make very good productions. I loved him again with Open Your Eyes, a film that even had a Hollywood remake. He left me speechless with The Others and made me cry a lot with The Sea Inside.

After that excellent film, I noticed a lack of impact in his subsequent works. Although I liked While the War Lasts, Agora did not meet my expectations, and Regression, with the girl from Harry Potter, was a disastrous film that I hated. Now he brings us El Cuativo, and I'm quite disappointed with how he has developed this story.

The film is based on real events, but adds other fictional elements. The beginning of the film is fine, it managed to interest me a little, but as it fills up with gay love, it loses its meaning, and there are scenes that I find really hard to believe. If any historians are reading this, could you confirm whether Algiers at that time was a city full of effeminate homosexuals walking the streets with blatant lust? That's what Miguel de Cervantes sees every time he walks those streets. To me, that's not credible.

I have no problem with gay themes, I love Brokeback Mountain and it was my favorite for the Oscars at the time, but the point is that what is shown here in El Cautivo is not a love story, there is a lot of submission and abuse. This will surely delight progressives in Spain, as the film conveys wokism throughout. Even when Muslims are shown committing murders, there is always some instructive line from a character saying that Christians treat them badly too. Things like this are what bother me about a film that clearly seeks to clean up its image, whitewash its reputation, normalize what is wrong, and give lessons that actually seem like indoctrination.

The film is about the years Miguel de Cervantes, the creator of Don Quixote de la Mancha, spent as a prisoner in Algiers. There, he devoted himself to inventing stories to entertain his fellow prisoners. The leader of that place, I don't remember what they called him, began to have a close relationship with Cervantes, who told him stories. I think this part has also been controversial among some historians and people who have studied Cervantes' work, since Amenábar practically tells us that Cervantes was gay or bisexual, because in the end he has homosexual relations with the city's leader, who, incidentally, also has a group of gay men in his harem with whom he has sex, threesomes, etc. Please, I need a historian to tell me if there is any evidence that this was the case.

The actor who plays Cervantes does an average job, nothing special; I don't think he's a great actor. I had seen him in a really bad movie, the disaster called Through My Window. I think he's also in the series Berlin, but I don't even remember it well. The veteran actors are quite good and more believable. Alessandro Borghi, the Italian actor, plays the leader of the Moors, and I liked his work. He's a great actor whom I've enjoyed watching in the series Suburra and Supersex. I recommend both series, and I reviewed them some time ago, as well as the film Il primo re.

If you don't watch El cautivo, you won't be missing anything impressive. Amenábar has disappointed me again; he has lost the spark of his early work. Now he is serving an agenda. You decide whether to give it a chance. Maybe you'll love it and I'm exaggerating.

Recuerdo que, a finales de los años noventa, vi la película Tesis, de Alejandro Amenábar, que me gustó mucho, y este cineasta, también joven por entonces, se perfilaba como una figura prometedora del cine español. Siguió haciendo muy buenas producciones. Me volvió a encantar con Abre los ojos, una película que incluso tuvo un remake en Hollywood. Me dejó sin palabras con Los otros y me hizo llorar mucho con Mar adentro.

Después de esa excelente película, noté una falta de impacto en sus siguientes trabajos. Aunque me gustó Mientras dure la guerra, Ágora no cumplió mis expectativas, y Regresión, con la chica de Harry Potter, fue una película desastrosa que odié. Ahora nos trae El Cuativo, y me ha decepcionado bastante cómo ha desarrollado esta historia.

La película trata sobre hechos reales, pero añade otros elementos inventados. El comienzo de la película está bien, consiguió interesarme un poco, pero a medida que se va llenando de amor gay, pierde su significado, y hay escenas que me parecen realmente difíciles de creer. Si algún historiador está leyendo esto, ¿podría confirmar si Argel en aquella época era una ciudad llena de homosexuales afeminados que caminaban por las calles con una lujuria descarada? Eso es lo que Miguel de Cervantes ve cada vez que camina por esas calles. Para mí, eso no es creíble.

No tengo ningún problema con los temas gays, me encanta Brokeback Mountain y era mi favorita para los Óscar en su momento, pero la cuestión es que lo que se muestra aquí en El Cautivo no es una historia de amor, hay mucha sumisión y abuso. Esto seguramente encantará a los progresistas en España, ya que la película transmite wokismo por todas partes. Incluso cuando se muestra a musulmanes cometiendo asesinatos, siempre hay alguna frase instructiva de algún personaje diciendo que los cristianos también los tratan mal. Cosas como estas son las que me molestan de una película que claramente busca limpiar su imagen, blanquear su reputación, normalizar lo que está mal y dar lecciones que en realidad parecen adoctrinamiento.

Alessandro Borghi, el actor italiano, interpreta al líder de los moros, y me gustó su trabajo. Es un gran actor al que he disfrutado viendo en las series Suburra y Supersex. Recomiendo ambas series, y las reseñé hace tiempo, al igual que la película Il primo re.

Si no ves El cautivo, no te perderás nada impresionante. Amenábar me ha decepcionado de nuevo; ha perdido la chispa de sus primeros trabajos. Ahora está al servicio de una agenda. Tú decides si le das una oportunidad. Quizás te encante y yo esté exagerando.
