En uno de los lugares más conocidos de la Habana Vieja, donde convergen el Paseo del Prado y la Avenida de las Misiones, se alza una figura serena y majestuosa que ha contemplado el ir y venir de la ciudad por más de siglo y medio: la Fuente de la India o Fuente de la Noble Habana. Este sitio no es solo un monumento bello u ornamental, es también un símbolo, una alegoría en mármol blanco que guarda el alma y la historia de la capital cubana.

In one of the most well-known spots in Old Havana, where Paseo del Prado and Avenida de las Misiones converge, stands a serene and majestic figure that has watched the city's comings and goings for over a century and a half: the Fountain of the Indian or Fountain of the Noble Havana. This site is not just a beautiful or ornamental monument; it is also a symbol, an allegory in white marble that guards the soul and history of the Cuban capital.
Tal vez muchos no sepan de donde viene el nombre de la Habana, les cuento. La fuente de la India representa a una joven indígenia taína, reconocida con el nombre de Habana, y fue la legendaria esposa del cacique Habaguanex. Según la tradición, su nombre, pronunciado por los colonizadores españoles, fue el que dio origen al de la ciudad. De esta forma, la escultura se convirtió en la personificación misma de La Habana, su protectora y su primera musa.
Perhaps many don't know where Havana's name comes from, let me tell you. The Fountain of the Indian represents a young Taino indigenous woman, recognized by the name Havana, and she was the legendary wife of the cacique (chief) Habaguanex. According to tradition, her name, pronounced by the Spanish colonizers, gave rise to that of the city. In this way, the sculpture became the very personification of Havana, its protector and its first muse.
La Fuente de la India está muy cerca varios sitios representativos de la capital, entre ellos: el Hotel Saratoga, que se encuentra en pleno proceso de reconstrucción luego de haber sufrido una explosión hace unos pocos años.

También, a un costado, se encuentra el célebre Parque de la Fraternidad, lugar de tránsito y referencia nacional. En uno de los bancos de este parque, me senté un rato a admirar la belleza de la Fuente de la India y a merendar algo para renovar fuerzas y seguir camino.
Also, on one side, is the famous Parque de la Fraternidad, a place of transit and national reference. On one of the benches in this park, I sat for a while to admire the beauty of the Fountain of the Indian and to have a snack to regain my strength and continue on my way.
Como muchas obras escultoricas de la época, esta también fue esculpida en Italia e inaugurada en 1837. Su creación responde al afán de embellecimiento y modernización de la ciudad, aunque vale destacar que esta maravilla sobrepasa lo urbanístico, para convertirse en un poderoso símbolo de identidad. A su lado, una palma real, presente en cada paisaje cubano, la custodia.
Like many sculptural works of the time, this one was also sculpted in Italy and inaugurated in 1837. Its creation responds to the zeal for the city's beautification and modernization, although it's worth noting that this wonder surpasses the merely urban, becoming a powerful symbol of identity. By its side, a royal palm, present in every Cuban landscape, stands guard.
La figura central de la fuente es de una belleza solemne. Una hermosa india, coronada con un penacho de plumas, sentada sobre un trono de rocas y vestida con un sencillo tunico semi transparente, que deja ver las siluetas de sus senos redondos y firmes. Su rostro muestra una expresión entre altiva y melancólica, entre alegres y triste que me hace recordar a la Monalisa, una mirada que parece perderse más allá del mar, evocando el mundo perdido de los pueblos originarios.
The fountain's central figure is one of solemn beauty. A beautiful Indian woman, crowned with a feathered headdress, sits on a throne of rocks and is dressed in a simple semi-transparent tunic that reveals the silhouettes of her round, firm breasts. Her face shows an expression somewhere between haughty and melancholic, between joyful and sad, which reminds me of the Mona Lisa, a gaze that seems to be lost beyond the sea, evoking the lost world of the original peoples.
En su mano derecha sostiene el escudo de armas de la ciudad. Con la izquierda, ofrece el extremo del cuerno de la abundancia, del cual caen frutos tropicales, simbolizando la riqueza y fertilidad de la isla. A sus pies, cuatro delfines arrojan (arrojaban) agua que caía en la amplia taza inferior.
In her right hand she holds the city's coat of arms. With her left, she offers the tip of the horn of plenty, from which tropical fruits fall, symbolizing the wealth and fertility of the island. At her feet, four dolphins spout (used to spout) water that fell into the wide lower basin.
La ubicación de esta fuente no es casual. Se encuentra situada a las puertas de la antigua Muralla de La Habana, que era la entrada principal a la ciudad de intramuros. Era la primera imagen que recibían viajeros y navegantes, una bienvenida alegórica que les recordaba el origen mítico del lugar al que arribaban. A pesar del derribo de las murallas la fuente permaneció ahí como un punto de referencia, testigo de repúblicas, revoluciones, noches de esplendor, días de desafío y decadencia.
The location of this fountain is not accidental. It is situated at the gates of the old Havana City Wall, which was the main entrance to the walled city. It was the first image received by travelers and sailors, an allegorical welcome that reminded them of the mythical origin of the place they were arriving at. Despite the demolition of the walls, the fountain remained there as a point of reference, a witness to republics, revolutions, nights of splendor, and days of challenge and decay.
Hoy, la Fuente de la India es más que un punto en el mapa de los turístas. Es un lugar de encuentro, un pedazo de historia en medio del tráfico de autos antiguos y modernos, de coches, bicicletas y vicitaxis. Su mármol, opaco por el tiempo y el clima tropical de mi Cuba, guarda las huellas de incontables manos y miradas.
Today, the Fountain of the Indian is more than a point on the tourist map. It is a meeting place, a piece of history amidst the traffic of ancient and modern cars, horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, and coco-taxis. Its marble, dulled by time and the tropical climate of my Cuba, holds the traces of countless hands and gazes.
Para los habaneros, es un sitio muy familiar, un elemento permanente del paisaje de la ciudad, porque la historia de La Habana no comenzó con los barcos españoles, sino con el pueblo valiente y rebelde que habitaba con anterioridad estas tierras. Para el visitante, esta es solo una obra de piedra, pero en su silencio, la India cuenta la primera de todas las historias, la del nombre, la identidad y el espíritu de La Habana.
For Habaneros, it is a very familiar site, a permanent element of the city's landscape, because Havana's history did not begin with Spanish ships, but with the brave and rebellious people who inhabited these lands before. For the visitor, this is just a stone work, but in its silence, the Indian tells the first of all stories, that of the name, identity, and spirit of Havana.
