Arrival in Australia and change of order

In this case, I am writing to you from Australia. And although I have a list of posts to share in chronological order, today I really want to share the latest thing I did. So HIVE will be the first platform to find out about this trip, in no uncertain terms.

It's about the visit, from Melbourne, to what is known as the Twelve Apostles and the Great Ocean Road, which is where they are located

Llegada a Australia y cambio de orden

En este caso les estoy escribiendo desde Australia. Y aunque tengo una lista pendiente de publicaciones para compartir de manera cronológica, hoy la verdad es que tengo ganas de compartir lo último que hice. Así que HIVE va a ser la primera plataforma en enterarse de este viaje, así, con todas las letras.

Se trata de la visita, desde Melbourne, a lo que se conoce como los Doce Apóstoles y la Great Ocean Road, que es donde están.

The Twelve Apostles and the Great Ocean Road

This is a region in southern Australia, almost at the southern tip of the country, which offers spectacular views of the ocean, the Southern Ocean. This entire route is part of the famous Great Ocean Road, which has various points where you can stop to visit viewpoints from which you can see needle-shaped rock and mountain formations, that belongs to Port Campbell National Park.

There used to be more of these formations; today there are six left, and it is estimated that in about 50 to 100 years they will no longer exist as we know them. The route allows you to contemplate these landscapes—this is just one example, there are others that you will see in the photos—and the nice thing about the tour is that, at the end of the route, they take you to an arch that marks the official start of this route.

Some tours start at the arch and others end there. I thought the guide's decision to end at the arch was a very good one, because there weren't so many people and because the afternoon light, without it being sunset yet, was very beautiful and pleasant. Besides, it was hot because it's summer, and that made it a more enjoyable time to take photos and stay for a while.

This arch not only marks the beginning of the Great Ocean Road, but is also a memorial dedicated to Australian soldiers who participated in World War I, known in English as The Great War.

Los Doce Apóstoles y la Great Ocean Road

Esta es una región del sur de Australia, casi en el extremo sur del país, que ofrece una vista espectacular del océano, estamos hablando del océano Austral. Todo este recorrido forma parte de la famosa Great Ocean Road, la Gran Ruta del Océano, que tiene distintos puntos donde uno puede ir parando para acercarse a miradores desde los cuales se observan formaciones rocosas y montañosas en forma de aguja, que son parte del Parque Nacional Port Campbell.

Estas formaciones eran más; hoy quedan seis, y se estima que en unos 50 o 100 años ya no van a existir tal como las conocemos. La ruta permite contemplar estos paisajes —este es solo un ejemplo, hay otros que van a ver en las fotos— y lo bonito del tour es que, al final del recorrido, te llevan a un arco que marca el inicio oficial de esta ruta.

Algunos tours empiezan por el arco y otros terminan ahí. A mí me pareció muy acertada la decisión del guía de terminar por el arco, porque no había tanta gente y porque la luz de la tarde, sin ser todavía atardecer, estaba muy linda y agradable. Además, hacía calor porque es verano, y eso hacía el momento más disfrutable para sacarse fotos y quedarse un ratito.

Este arco no solo indica el inicio de la Great Ocean Road, sino que también es un memorial dedicado a los soldados australianos que participaron en la Primera Guerra Mundial, conocida en inglés como The Great War.

A long, intense tour with no breaks

The Great Ocean Road is 243 kilometers long, which is what makes it so unique for a one-day visit. The tour consists of spending 12 to 13 hours on the bus: from the moment you are picked up at the meeting point until you are dropped off again.

It takes about two hours to get to the circuit, and from there, the driver starts driving along the route, making five, six, or even seven stops so you can get out at the viewpoints, take photos, and admire the landscape.

At the end of the tour, we were surprised by the appearance of kangaroos, which was really cute. We also saw koalas, which you can see in the photos.

The least enjoyable part of the tour was that we didn't have a quiet moment to have lunch or sit down for a leisurely coffee. The first leg lasted about two and a half hours, and we didn't even stop to go to the bathroom. I think that such a rushed pace meant that I didn't enjoy some parts as much, although I understand that, in order to see everything in 12 hours, there is no other way.

Un tour largo, intenso y sin pausas

La Great Ocean Road tiene una longitud de 243 kilómetros, y eso es lo que la hace tan particular para una visita de un solo día. El tour consiste en estar entre 12 y 13 horas en el bus: desde que te buscan en el punto de encuentro hasta que te dejan de regreso.

Se tarda alrededor de dos horas en llegar al circuito y, desde ahí, el chofer empieza a conducir por la ruta, haciendo unas cinco, seis o incluso siete paradas para que puedas bajar a los miradores, sacar fotos y contemplar el paisaje.

Al final del recorrido nos sorprendieron con la aparición de canguros, lo cual fue re lindo. También pudimos ver koalas, que ustedes pueden ver en las fotos.

Lo menos bueno del tour fue que no tuvimos un momento tranquilo para almorzar o para sentarnos a tomar un café con calma. El primer tramo duró unas dos horas y media y ni siquiera paramos para ir al baño. Creo que ese ritmo tan apurado hizo que yo no disfrutara tanto algunos puntos, aunque entiendo que, para poder ver todo en 12 horas, no hay otra manera.

Why do the “apostles” fall?

It is believed that there were never really twelve of these limestone needles. There were probably eight or ten. Currently, there are six left, and one of them recently fell.

These formations belong to the cliff that can also be seen in the photos. The sea constantly beats against the cliff, eroding it and forming these needles. First, the formation is created, and over time, the base is weakened by the action of water and wind until, finally, the needle falls.

Therefore, in the future, these formations will probably disappear or very few will remain, and perhaps new ones will emerge.

¿Por qué se caen los “apóstoles”?

Se cree que nunca llegaron a ser realmente doce estas agujas de piedra caliza. Probablemente fueron ocho o diez. Actualmente quedan seis, y recientemente se cayó una de ellas.

Estas formaciones pertenecen al acantilado que también se ve en las fotos. El mar golpea constantemente el acantilado, lo va erosionando y va formando estas agujas. Primero se genera la formación y, con el paso del tiempo, la base se va debilitando por la acción del agua y del viento hasta que, finalmente, la aguja se cae.

Por eso, a futuro, probablemente estas formaciones desaparezcan o queden muy pocas, y quizás surjan nuevas.

Apollo Bay, my favorite place on the tour

What I liked most about this tour was Apollo Bay. It's a small coastal town with a beautiful sea, different places to have a drink, eat ice cream, and walk around.

It has a very famous ice cream shop called Dooley's. I loved it because I tried an ice cream flavor I had never tried before: anise. I didn't even know what anise was, but when I tried it, I liked it so much that I ordered it and enjoyed it a lot. It's famous and really worth it because the ice cream is very, very good.

I had lunch there, although it was quite simple: my lunch consisted of some typical Australian crackers. I also took the opportunity to walk from one end of the beach to the other, which I enjoyed very much after sitting on the bus for so long. That was the longest stop on the tour and lasted almost an entire hour.

Apollo Bay, mi lugar favorito del recorrido

Lo que más me gustó de este tour fue Apollo Bay. Es un pequeño pueblo costero con un mar muy bonito, distintos locales para tomar algo, comer helado y caminar.

Tiene una heladería muy famosa que se llama Dooley’s. A mí me encantó porque probé un helado que jamás había probado antes: el de anís. Ni siquiera sabía bien qué era el anís, pero cuando lo probé me gustó tanto que lo pedí y lo disfruté un montón. Es famosa y realmente lo vale, porque el helado es muy, muy bueno.

Ahí pude almorzar, aunque de una manera bastante simple: mi almuerzo fueron unas galletitas saladas típicas de Australia. Aproveché también para caminar de punta a punta una de sus playas, algo que disfruté muchísimo después de haber estado tanto tiempo sentada en el bus. Esa fue la parada más larga del recorrido y duró casi una hora entera.

​​Travel fast and learn to slow down

Well, friends at HIVE, I hope you enjoyed this little trip through southern Melbourne, Australia. I'll tell you a little more about this trip as I gradually look back on it.

You know when you're moving so fast that you can't even stop to live in the here and now, something that yoga promotes so much. In this case, I'm finding it quite difficult, firstly because there's so much going on and secondly because I'm also quite anxious: not knowing the places, thinking about the destinations I still have to visit, all of that makes me nervous.

Viajar rápido y aprender a frenar

Bueno, amigos de HIVE, espero que hayan disfrutado de este paseíto por el sur de Melbourne, Australia. Ya les iré contando un poco más de todo este viaje, que de a poco voy mirando hacia atrás.

Viste cuando vas avanzando tan rápido que ni siquiera podés detenerte a vivir el aquí y ahora, algo que tanto se promueve desde el yoga. En este caso, a mí me está costando bastante, primero porque son muchas cosas y segundo porque estoy también bastante ansiosa: no conocer los lugares, pensar en los destinos que me faltan, todo eso me genera nervios.

So I'm working hard to live in the present. I'm not posting content as often because that makes me more anxious and stressed, that “I have to post, I have to post” feeling. I prefer to do it when it flows, like now, when I felt like sharing my most recent adventure with you.

Así que estoy haciendo un trabajo importante en habitar el presente. No estoy subiendo contenido con tanta frecuencia porque eso me genera más ansiedad y estrés, ese “tengo que subir, tengo que subir”.
