A wonderful experience visiting an elephant sanctuary in Thailand: I invite you to come and see it for yourself

Hello dear friends at Hive! I'm here to share with you a wonderful experience I had in my life, which was visiting an elephant sanctuary near the province of Chiang Mai. I chose the Kanta sanctuary, which was recommended to me by an Italian girl I met at one of the hostels where I was staying in the same city.

It was quite difficult to find the “ideal” place, because before you arrive in Thailand, they tell you that you absolutely must go to a sanctuary and not a zoo or anything other than a sanctuary. But it turns out that there are hundreds of “sanctuaries.” Now, almost all places that offer elephant visits in Thailand are called sanctuaries.

I was determined not to see elephants if it meant going to an unethical place where the elephants were on display to the public. The truth is, in a natural, wild environment, what elephant would approach humans?

Gran experiencia visitando un santuario de elefantes en Tailandia: te invito a conocerlo

Hola amigos queridos de Hive!! Vengo a compartir con ustedes una experiencia hermosa en mi vida, y se trata de visitar un santuario de elefantes, cerca de la provincia de Chiang Mai.

Elegí el santuario Kanta, que me recomendó una chica italiana que conocí en uno de los hostels en los que me hospedaba, en esa misma ciudad.

Fue bastante complicado conseguir el lugar “ideal”, ya que antes de llegar a Tailandia te dirán que tenés que ir sí o sí a un santuario y no a un zoológico ni a nada que no sea un santuario. Pero resulta que hay cientos de “santuarios”. Ahora, casi todos los lugares que ofrecen visita a elefantes en Tailandia, se llaman santuario.

Yo estaba decidida a no ver elefantes si eso implicaba asistir a un lugar con falta de ética y en donde los elefantes estuvieran expuestos para el público. Lo cierto, es que… en un entorno natural y salvaje, ¿qué elefante se acercaría a los seres humanos?

Looking for the best sanctuary

So the next step was to read reviews thoroughly. I started by reading the negative comments, and all of them criticized the treatment of the animals in some way. So I moved on to asking other travelers about their experiences.

The best information I got was that I had to go to a sanctuary that had the ACES (Asian Captive Elephant Standards) seal to at least guarantee a certain ethical treatment and, above all, the ethical origin of the elephants, since many reviews referred to the presence of baby elephants in the sanctuaries, which is not related to the “rescue” that these establishments refer to.

Finally, I found Kanta, a place whose experience I will recount. I myself have not wanted to give it a positive or negative connotation because I am unaware of the background of this trade, and the truth is that I do not want to judge the place, because what I saw was very loving treatment of the elephants, but in a context that I will describe below.

Buscando el mejor santuario

Entonces el paso siguiente fue leer reseñas de manera exhaustiva. Empecé leyendo los comentarios negativos, y todos en algún aspecto criticaban el trato con los animales. Por lo que pasé a preguntar a otros viajeros sobre esta experiencia.

El mejor dato que conseguí, fue que tenía que ir a un santuario que tuviese el sello de ACES (Asian Captive Elephant Standars) para al menos garantizar cierto trato ético y sobre todo procedencia ética de los elefantes, ya que muchas reseñas hacían referencia a la presencia de elefantes bebés en los santuarios, lo cual no se relaciona con el “rescate” al que refieren estos establecimientos.

Finalmente di con Kanta, un lugar cuya experiencia contaré. Yo misma no he querido dar una connotación ni positiva ni negativa porque desconozco el trasfondo de este comercio, y la verdad es que no quiero juzgar al sitio, porque lo que ví, fue un trato muy amoroso con los elefantes, pero en un contexto que contaré a continuación.

Kanta Sanctuary

The experience consisted of arriving at the place where we were given a uniform to spend the morning with the elephants, prepare their food, and feed them.

These elephants had been rescued from different places, and all of them had been used in the logging industry to transport large quantities of tons, including a 6-year-old calf. That is a “puppy” age, so to speak, for an elephant, as they live between 60 and 70 years.

There were two females and two males, one of the males was the baby and the other was a teenager. There were no adult males because, coming from different herds, they would start to compete fiercely with each other.

One of the females was already 60 years old, her skin was very thick and scarred. When I approached, I noticed a tear running down her face. I almost started crying myself. An Italian woman traveling with her husband approached and wiped away the tear, which was already running down her trunk, and I heard her husband say, “What she must have seen.” I was so moved that I almost started crying right there.

Santuario Kanta

La experiencia consistió en llegar al lugar en donde nos dieron un uniforme para pasar la mañana con los elefantes, prepararles comida y alimentarlos.

Estos elefantes habían sido rescatados de diferentes lugares, y todos estaban siendo utilizados para la industria maderera, para transportar grandes cantidades de toneladas, incluido un pequeño de 6 años. Esa es una edad de “cachorro”, digamos, para un elefante, ya que viven entre 60 y 70 años.

Habían dos hembras y dos machos, uno de los machos era el bebé y el otro, adolescente, no habían machos adultos porque juntos, al ser de diferentes manadas, empiezan a competir salvajemente.

Una de las hembras ya tenía 60, su piel era muy gruesa y tenía cicatrices. Cuando me acerqué, noté cómo una lágrima se escurría por su rostro. Casi me largo a llorar. Una italiana que viajaba con su marido, se acercó y le secó la lágrima, que ya iba por la trompa, y escuché que el marido dijo: “lo que habrá visto”. Me conmovió tanto que casi me largo a llorar ahí mismo.

Well, we changed, approached a wooden fence where the four elephants were already waiting, and began feeding them bananas and corn, which they took with their trunks and carried to their mouths themselves. It was a lot of fun, and the elephants really ate a lot while seeming to enjoy themselves, as they moved their ears, which means they are happy.

Each elephant had its guide next to it, as each one has a keeper, who is also its trainer.

Then they took us to prepare some protein balls and other nutrients for them, which was a very funny and entertaining moment for the travelers, and from there we went on to feed them again. This time we had to put the nutrient balls in their mouths. As I did so, I noticed that the animal's tongue was so soft that it was almost imperceptible, and although they left me with a little saliva (not very pleasant), I am actually grateful to have experienced that texture.

It turns out that they don't have taste buds, but they love to eat and are crazy about bananas. This is because they love their soft consistency. As a side note, it's worth adding that they eat non-stop, and their diet reaches 300 kg per day. For this reason, I understand that the existence of these sanctuaries is indeed important, as it helps raise funds to obtain both the food and veterinary care that elephants need.

Pues bien, nos cambiamos, nos acercamos a una valla de madera donde ya estaban los 4 elefantes y empezamos a darles bananas y maíz, que tomaban con su trompa y ellos mismos llevaban a su boca. Fue muy divertido y los elefantes la verdad que comieron mucho al tiempo que parecían divertirse, ya que movían sus orejas, lo que significa que están contentos.

Cada elefante tenía a su guía al lado, ya que cada uno de ellos tiene a un cuidador, que también es su entrenador.

Después nos llevaron a prepararles unas bolas de proteína y otros nutrientes, momento muy gracioso y divertido para los viajeros, y de ahí pasamos a alimentarlos nuevamente. Esta vez teníamos que darles las bolas de nutrientes en la boca. Al hacerlo, noté que la lengua del animal era tan suave que era casi imperceptible, y aunque me dejaron un poco de saliva (no muy agradable esto), la verdad es que agradezco haber conocido esa textura.

Resulta que ellos no tienen papilas gustativas, sin embargo, aman comer y son fanáticos de las bananas. Esto es porque adoran su consistencia blanda. Al margen, cabe agregar que comen sin parar, y su dieta llega a los 300 kg por día. Por esto, entiendo que la existencia de estos santuarios sí que es importante, pues ayuda a recaudar fondos para conseguir tanto la comida como la atención veterinaria que necesitan los elefantes.

After this, some people went to bathe with the elephants and brush them. In my case, I chose not to do so because I saw some excrement floating in the water, and I honestly didn't dare to get in there. There were four of us who didn't bathe, but the rest of the group, about ten people, did.

That was the end of the activity, and the elephants were taken away. Here are some conclusions about the positive and negative aspects, from a personal perspective, which does not mean that they are correct:

Después de este momento, algunas personas se fueron a bañar con los elefantes y a cepillarlos. En mi caso, preferí no hacerlo porque vi un poco de excremento flotando en el agua, y la verdad que no me atreví a meterme ahí. Fuimos 4 las personas que no nos bañamos, pero el resto del grupo, unas 10 personas. sí que lo hicieron.

Allí terminó la actividad y se llevaron a los elefantes.

Algunas conclusiones en sus aspectos positivos y negativos, desde una perspectiva personal, que no significa que sea correcta:

Pros

The elephants are in contact with visitors for only 4 hours a day, 2 hours in the morning shift and 2 hours in the afternoon shift. There is a full-day excursion, in which case I know they take a walk with them, but I don't think the exposure time is much more than 5 hours. It seems quite adequate to me, but I don't know if it stresses them out.

It's true that an adult elephant wouldn't know how to live in a completely wild environment after spending its life in any industry. For example, there was a part of the fence open two meters away from them. They could have escaped, but none of them even tried. This means that elephants that have learned a certain behavior rarely question it, so in a jungle, they would behave as they were taught and would be too vulnerable to other animals.

They are well fed, they look happy, and there are people who can see them every day.

Puntos a favor

Los elefantes están en contacto con los visitantes solo 4 horas al día, 2 horas para el turno de la mañana y 2 horas turno tarde. Hay una excursión que dura todo el día, en ese caso supe que hacen un paseo caminando con ellos, pero no creo que sea mucho más de 5 horas el tiempo de exposición. A mi me parece bastante adecuado, pero no sé si eso los estresa.

Es verdad que un elefante adulto no sabría vivir en un entorno completamente salvaje después de pasar su vida en cualquier industria, pues por ejemplo, había una parte de la valla abierta a dos metros de distancia de ellos. Podrían haber escapado, pero ninguno siquiera lo intentó. Esto significa que el elefante que aprendió un comportamiento, raramente lo cuestiona, por lo que en una selva, se comportaría como le enseñaron, y quedaría demasiado vulnerable a los otros animales.

Están bien alimentados, se ven felices, y hay gente que puede verlos a diario

Cons:

The sanctuary doesn't show anything about where these elephants actually live. I would have liked to see a little more of the animals' daily lives there and not just “play” with them. I would have liked to see where they sleep, how they sleep, if they have ample space to run around, but no, they just brought them in and then took them away.

Each elephant has its own keeper, who also teaches and reprimands it when the elephant tries to express itself in a more natural way. The keeper also tells the elephant how to behave with people: whether it should hug you or raise its trunk. I don't know if it's “wrong,” but I wasn't interested in seeing that. I just wanted to see free elephants, and in this case, I see that they are still part of both the tourism and entertainment industries. I don't know if I'm exaggerating.

Because of these things, I ultimately have a neutral image of the place and the experience. But overall, I enjoyed attending that activity.

Puntos en contra:

En el santuario no se muestra nada de dónde viven efectivamente estos elefantes, a mi me hubiese gustado ver un poco más el día a día de los animales allí y no “jugar” con ellos. Hubiese querido ver donde duermen, cómo, si tienen un amplio espacio donde correr, pero no, simplemente los trajeron y luego se los llevaron.

Cada elefante tiene a su cuidador y este también le enseña y lo reprende cuando el elefante busca expresarse de manera quizás, más natural. También le indica cómo comportarse con las personas: si tiene que abrazarte, si tiene que levantar la trompa. No sé si está “mal”, pero a mi no me interesaba ver eso, sólo quería ver elefantes libres, y en este caso veo que siguen siendo parte de la insdustria tanto del turismo como del entretenimiento. No sé si estoy exagerando.

Por estas cosas al final tengo una imagen neutra del lugar y de la experiencia. Pero en general, me gustó asistir a esa actividad.
