Her agent/roommate smiled broadly as he approached, but it was his please don't be mad, we need the money smile, so she was immediately wary.
“Kyle, what did you do?”
He laughed his nervous laugh and tried to act nonchalant but the constant clicking of the mechanical pencil in his hand was a dead giveaway.
“It's nothing really, Steph! Ummm…You know how we're flat broke and can't afford rent these days, much less studio time?”
“Uh huh…?” she cautiously agreed.
“Well …I got you a gig.“
“A gig? But that's great news! I haven't performed in so long! Where's the venue? How long of a set list do we need? Do we need to hire a band? This is so exciting! Wait, why aren't you excited…?”
“Oh, you know…I am. So excited…Anyway, it's at a private residence, not really a big crowd. But the money's great!”
She looked at him closely.
“Is it an anniversary or a wedding reception or something...?”
“It's a birthday, I believe…?" He said as if he might be forgetting the details but his acting was poor. Naturally her intuition started screaming at her.
“How. Big. Is. The crowd.” She asked, carefully enunciating every word.
“Just one.” He mumbled sheepishly.
“For crying out loud! We are not that broke yet. And if we do get that broke at some point in the future, YOU will be the one on the street corner while I sit at home counting money, you hear me??”
And they probably spent the rest of the afternoon creating a checklist for what constitutes a legitimate gig for a musician as opposed to a thinly veiled foray into the world's oldest profession.
Hopefully the rent still got paid.
