In the nightmare, Professor Smith, a renowned medievalist, was running in the dark. He didn't know what the danger was, but he was very afraid. He tried to call for help but couldn't. Who could help him in the middle of the night in that narrow street near the castle, where centuries ago they tortured those who were heretics, possessed by the devil? He remembered the pear of despair, that instrument that, when opened, prevented speech. Anguish and silence went hand in hand, he had explained to his students that morning. “It's just a horror legend invented in the 19th century. That instrument, shaped like a sweet fruit, was actually used to open the mouth during surgery.” When he woke up in the middle of the night, his heart was still racing.

En la pesadilla, el profesor Smith, un reconocido medievalista, corría en la oscuridad no sabía de qué peligro, pero sentía mucho miedo, trataba de pedir ayuda y no podía. Quién podía ayudarlo en medio de la noche en esa estrecha calle cercana al castillo, donde siglos atrás torturaban a quienes eran herejes, poseídos por el demonio. Recordó la pera de la desesperación, ese instrumento que al abrirse impedía hablar. La angustia y el silencio se daban la mano, había explicado a sus alumnos esa mañana. “Es sólo una leyenda de terror inventada en el siglo XIX, ese instrumento con forma de dulce fruto se usó en realidad para abrir la boca en cirugías”. Cuando despertó, en medio de la noche, su corazón aún latía de manera acelerada.
