Amongst pincers and racks, the iron silhouette of the ‘Pear of Anguish’ stands out, an object that was opened by means of a screw in the darkness of the dungeons. Guides often morbidly recount its punitive use, although modern history suggests that this artefact was, in fact, a surgical separator or a simple gag to prevent screams. However, the collective imagination prefers horror to medicine, and this is where multicultural language makes its own poetic intervention.

Academic precision yields to sonority. Although the technical term is Anguish, everyday speech has ended up christening it The Pear of Despair. The reason is an irresistible linguistic magnetism. Not only is there a perfect rhyme between the fruit and despair, but the term also plays on the homophony of pair. Thus, the ‘pair of despair’ becomes, to the attentive ear, an iron fruit symbolising absolute collapse. This transmutation of the cruel into the rhythmic allows the nightmare of the dungeon to slide into satire and social wit today.

Qué curioso, pues hace algunos años, caminando por los pasillos de un museo de tortura, me tropecé con el metal frío de una leyenda malinterpretada, recuerdo. Entre pinzas y potros, destaca la silueta férrea de la «Pera de la Angustia», un objeto que se abría mediante un tornillo en la oscuridad de las mazmorras. Los guías suelen narrar con morbo su uso punitivo, aunque la historia moderna sugiere que este artefacto era, en realidad, un separador quirúrgico o un simple mordaz para evitar alaridos. Sin embargo, el imaginario colectivo prefiere el horror a la medicina, y es aquí donde el lenguaje multicultural realiza su propia intervención poética.

La precisión académica se rinde ante la sonoridad. Aunque el término técnico sea Anguish, el habla cotidiana ha terminado por bautizarla como The Pear of Despair.
