Sugar is sweet and sometimes irresistible for most people. Waking up in the morning, we take tea, pap, cereal, etc.; all these contain sugar, down to the snacks we take in between meals, the soft drinks, biscuits, carbohydrates, and so on.

You will find out that both directly and indirectly, our intake of sugar on a daily basis is just so high. However, the question is, should sugar be regulated just the same way alcohol is regulated? Knowing the long-term impact on our health?

Now think of the way alcohol intake is regulated for the sake of our health and think of sugar, which we can't escape consuming daily either by drinks or through some kind of meals. The fact that we consume sugar-related food every now and then is already enough reason to regulate it.

Now that I am writing about this, I am even wondering why it hasn't been regulated all these years. It's thoughtful to regulate the intake of sugar for healthier living. It's even difficult to think of food that doesn't contain sugar in certain quantities. Now this is what we take daily; no wonder the rate at which both young and old people suffer diabetes has increased drastically.

Currently, four members of my extended family are suffering from diabetes. For my sister-in-law, hers just started, and she told me yesterday that it's only rich people that can maintain a diabetic kind of food. She finds it difficult to abstsin from those Carbohydrate food that contains natural sugar due to finances , however she still suffer the effect of the diabetes silently.

Even if it's hereditary in this case, there are levels of regulation that wouldn't make it become severe, but the thing is that people are not well educated on the negative effects of high sugar intake. People are not informed; they are not much aware, and that's why labels on this food concerning the level of sugar are important. That's why adequate education on the part of the masses is important.

Regulation is needed if you ask me because sugar is everywhere. We rarely talked about the long-term damage of sugar intake in the human body, whereas this has been silently killing people. Causing obesity, even heart disease, tooth decay, and many other diseases associated with too much sugar consumption.

For someone like me who is still addicted with sugar , this regulation will give me some level of awareness and help me stay informed with my choices. I was with my twin brother some days back, and his wife complained bitterly over my sugar intake. No doubt, I have been a victim of this, like others like me. Imagine seeing adverts regularly on the impact of sugar intake and again having labels on each kind of food I buy over the level of sugar in it. This will be a great step to curbing this challenge eating deep into the health of many today.

Overall, sugar shouldn't be banned, but regulation is vital, which in turn entails strong public awareness.

This post is in response to the Hive Learners prompt on the topic titled, SUGAR BAN.
