Truth, Safety, and Trust: The Whistleblower Dilemma

If there’s one thing that is obvious about we humans, it’s the fact that we talk a lot. Humans talk every blessed day about so many things depending on what is up for discussion. We even gossip a lot about others. But if there’s one thing most people don’t do, it’s to be whistle blowers.

Where I come from, some people call it snitching. Whether it’s for a good or bad cause, people would find a way to make you to be the bad person and you know what they say, snitches get stitches. Day in- day out, we see so many things happening around us and most of us just pretend we didn’t see it happen or just turn a blind eye to it. Growing up, one thing I learnt to do the hard way is to mind my business and be in my lane. This is because when you choose to mind someone’s business, you might end up becoming the bad person or the monkey when things get resolved. You might even be labeled as an enemy or a hater by the parties involved.

It happens everyday and we all know about it. The only thing is, no one speak about it. It’s like a silent rule you don’t need to be told about. You just happen to magically mess around and find about it - learning the hard as always does the magic for most people. Per what I have seen in the movies, things don’t end up well for some whistle blowers depending on the situation. And I’d like to believe that if it wasn’t real, it wouldn’t even be acted out as a movie and this t that it did happen all day, everyday.

I’ve even seen in movies how some of these whistle blowers have to be taken into witness protection for fear of getting harmed or even losing their lives. I haven’t heard of much cases of such things in Ghana where I come from. People just happen to be arrested and reprimanded. I guess it’s also probably because I might not have come across such information yet which means that it probably isn’t happening this way in my country. If it was, I probably would have heard or it by now.

Either way, the government needs to put measures in place to protect such people. I don’t think I’d be a whistle blower because I probably and most definitely wouldn’t find myself in such a situation and even if I did, I would act like I didn’t see it- that’s if it doesn’t cost any one’s life. But if it does , I would make sure to find a way to alert the authorities without putting myself at risk. Someone might be willing to risk everything they have to be a whistle blower and the government must make sure to put things in place to protect these people from any harm whatsoever because doing a whistle blower isn’t an easy decision to make no matter the situation and these individuals deserve all the protection and support they can get from the government and citizens at large.
