This whistle blowers and whistle blowing happens to be something I have really thought about some times in the past. I wonder how they do their findings, most importantly I wonder how secured their lives and families are. At times, I do out myself in their shoes and wonder if I would have spoken up if I see something wrong, or I would just shush my mouth and look away. I actually cannot say whistle blowing is bad, but then thinking about the fact that it can mess with one's life is enough reason to just be mute.
As a Nigerian, it was said that there's freedom of speech, but how many of us are really experiencing that freedom in our speech, a lot of things are going on, a lot of people are being jailed, not because they stole, but because they talked freely. Talk less of someone who's a whistle blower. I believe anyone who does that already knows what he/she sign up for, they should know no firm or organization would want to hire them, their family, life and reputation are at risk, and in short, they should know they Re risking everything, every single thing
Whistle blowing isn't bad, and in a working country, that should be what every citizen should do, it would help to hold the government accountable, aside that, citizens will be able to freely report crimes knowing fully well that they will be protected. But in a setting and system like ours, it is not advisable for everyone to become a whistle blower, anyone who saw an evil or wrong doing would first think about his/her life before saying they want to talk.
And as I mentioned a working country earlier, if a country is working well and everything is in place there won't be need for much whistle blowers, because crime itself will reduce, leaders would be more accountable and the justice system will be fair. So, even a whistle blower won't always be needed, and even when they come out to blow the whistle by spilling the truth, it won't be at the expense of their lives.
Having said that, it is important to note first that there should be very solid and good laws that will guarantee anonymity for whistle blowers and their families. I'm saying the government should be responsible for the safety of a whistle blower and not leave them or their families exposed to danger. Also, the system should as well have a way of making sure whatever is spilled by a whistle blower is genuine, I believe there's a way to do that via investigations, reviews and the likes.
Whistle blowers I believe are strong and courageous people, but it's more than just that, because their lives will always be at risk in a non-working system. Truth should be valued and the nation should be responsible for them(their lives).
