Summers we have tornadoes and powerful storms with hail and heavy rain, winters may have some snowstorms. But earthquakes? For now, it was just a topic to not envy my friends from California. But yeah the risk is real. The fear started on Thursday when there was a 4.2 earthquake not far from Great Falls in Montana, the state that makes border with Canada. Some communities in the border with the US felt somehow a bit, like Coutts. And then yesterday, a 4.3 earthquake hit south of the city of Slave Lake. I heard that the tremor could be felt even in Edmonton. So what is going on ?
Not long ago, in a discussion, I learned that British Columbia is located in the border of the North American and Juan de Fuca plate, the same one where California is. So in case of a "Big One" for sure BC residents will suffer as much as Californians. BC has even dormant volcanoes. The Garibaldi Volcanic Belt that starts north of Vancouver which includes dozens of mountains that could be potential active volcanoes like Mount Garibaldi and also Northern Cordilleran Province which is in the north of the Province and continues into Yukon and there you can find the most active with the famous Lava Fork volcano last active 150 years ago with some potential to be active again in the future.
But looking at a map from the government, we can see that the western part of Alberta is also at risk of getting earthquakes. Interesting that the region of the second earthquake was considered a region of low risk, a bit outside of the yellow zone in the map below.
We are far from the Juan de Fuca fault, so it looks like earthquakes in here can be related to other things occurring in the North American plate. So even those earthquakes with the potential to happen around here probably aren't going to be as strong as the ones that happen near the Juan de Fuca fault. Some are even associated still with the Rocky Mountains formation.
Anyways, it is something that I need to keep my radar on since it is a possibility to happen here in the region. Earthquakes probably are rarer than tornadoes and storms, but if we have some shaking around here, we will try to stay a bit calm. For now, since I have lived here for 4 years,I still haven't felt anything of this, but I also never see a tornado with my eyes. What could happen first?

Por enquanto, era apenas um assunto para não invejar meus amigos da Califórnia. Mas sim, o risco é real. O medo começou na quinta-feira, quando houve um terremoto de magnitude 4,2 perto de Great Falls, em Montana, estado que faz fronteira com o Canadá. Algumas comunidades na fronteira com os EUA sentiram um pouco o tremor, como Coutts. E ontem, um terremoto de magnitude 4,3 atingiu o sul da cidade de Slave Lake. Ouvi dizer que o tremor pôde ser sentido até em Edmonton. Então, o que está acontecendo?
Não faz muito tempo, em uma conversa, descobri que a Colúmbia Britânica está localizada na fronteira entre as placas tectônicas da América do Norte e de Juan de Fuca, a mesma onde fica a Califórnia. Portanto, em caso de um grande terremoto, com certeza os moradores da Colúmbia Britânica sofrerão tanto quanto os californianos. A Colúmbia Britânica possui até mesmo vulcões adormecidos. O Cinturão Vulcânico de Garibaldi, que começa ao norte de Vancouver, inclui dezenas de montanhas que poderiam se tornar vulcões ativos, como o Monte Garibaldi. Há também a Província da Cordilheira do Norte, que fica no norte da província e se estende até o Yukon, onde se encontra o vulcão Lava Fork, famoso por sua atividade, que não entra em erupção há 150 anos e ainda apresenta potencial para voltar à atividade no futuro.
Mas, observando um mapa do governo, podemos ver que a parte oeste de Alberta também corre o risco de sofrer terremotos. Curiosamente, a região do segundo terremoto foi considerada de baixo risco, um pouco fora da zona amarela no mapa abaixo.
Estamos longe da falha de Juan de Fuca, então parece que os terremotos aqui podem estar relacionados a outros eventos que ocorrem na placa norte-americana. Então, mesmo os terremotos com potencial para ocorrer por aqui, provavelmente não serão tão fortes quanto os que acontecem perto da falha de Juan de Fuca. Alguns estão até associados à formação das Montanhas Rochosas.
&emspDe qualquer forma, é algo que preciso ficar de olho, já que existe a possibilidade de acontecer aqui na região. Terremotos provavelmente são mais raros do que tornados e tempestades, mas se houver algum tremor por aqui, tentaremos manter a calma. Por enquanto, já que moro aqui há 4 anos, ainda não senti nada disso, mas também nunca vi um tornado com meus próprios olhos. O que poderia acontecer primeiro?
