It is very common to see flower vendors in some parks in Vedado. They are usually on their way to Colón Cemetery, where the largest concentration of them can be found in the surrounding areas.
Bringing flowers to the deceased is a deeply rooted practice in Cuban idiosyncrasy. This custom has religious and cultural roots, inherited from both Spanish and African traditions, where the act of bringing flowers represents respect, remembrance, and a way of keeping the bond with those who are no longer with us alive. It is a silent way of saying we are still here, we have not forgotten you.
But not all flowers are for the deceased. I have also seen, and I myself have done it, buying roses to give to very, very alive loved ones 😏 and that is also wonderful. Flowers as a gesture of love, gratitude, or simply everyday affection.

Es muy común ver en algunos parques del Vedado a los vendedores de flores. Habitualmente están de camino al Cementerio de Colón, donde en sus alrededores es donde más presencia de estos hay.
Llevar flores a los difuntos es una práctica muy arraigada en la idiosincrasia del cubano. Esta costumbre tiene raíces tanto religiosas como culturales, heredadas de tradiciones españolas y africanas, donde el acto de llevar flores representa respeto, recuerdo y la forma de mantener vivo el vínculo con quienes ya no están. Es una manera silenciosa de decir seguimos aquí, no te olvidamos.
Pero no todas las flores son para los difuntos. También he visto, y yo mismo lo he hecho, comprar rosas para regalar a personas queridas muy, muy vivas 😏 y eso también es genial. Las flores como gesto de amor, de agradecimiento o simplemente de cariño cotidiano.
