Egypt is a country of different realities: for a country that is mostly desert, there are also places bubbling with life. In the capital Cairo, the same is true for the old and the new, blending almost seamlessly.
The pyramids, one of the ancient wonders of the world, are side by side with a bustling city, and live with the constant influx of tourists, and the camels that come along.
Minarets rise to the sky, together with skyscrappers lost among the morning fog - or smog, I couldn't tell. Since this is a #monomad challenge, I didn't mind it at all; love to see foggy photos, and it looks especially well in a monochromatic setting. Even the inside of mosques, with an array of lights in a circular fashing, looks good stripped of colours.
And just a few minutes away from these ancient wonders, life goes by in the souks, the typical markets, where everything is sold and tranquility is nowhere to be seen.
One of the things that surprised me the most is the amount of things we actually don't know about the ancient Egypt: so many construction details that don't make sense given our current understanding, so many hidden cameras and tunnels, the orientation of the ancient buildings with the stars and with other buildings kilometers away (sometimes thousands of them!). The excavations and the quest for more explanations continue, up to this day.
The triangular shape lost in the horizon serves as a reminder that Giza's pyramids are not the only ones in existance. How many more will we stumble upon, and how many have been lost as centuries went by? Guess we will likely never know. And the ones that have seen it, remaing vigilant with a stone expression, but without sharing any secrets.
One thing is true, being able to stand next to these fragments of ancient times is nothing short of awesome. I had low expectations for these vacations, but the experience blew my mind. And as usual, the sames question arises... and now, where next? :)
