Ballet has always been a passion of mine, even though I've never practiced it. I can honestly say I'm a frustrated classical ballet dancer 😖. It always caught my attention, but I fell in love with it too late, when my mom and I used to take my little sister to her ballet classes. At that time, I was about 15 or 16 years old, and obviously, I couldn't train in that discipline anymore. However, I always dreamed of doing it, even if not professionally. But in my city, they didn't usually offer classes for adults or teenagers. Now they do, but the lessons are extremely expensive, so I'm content with watching this kind of content on YouTube and following my favorite classical dancers, like the Russian Natalia Osipova and the Argentinian Marianela Nuñez 🤗. Nevertheless, after consuming so much of this kind of content, the YouTube algorithm led me to a couple of channels that have introduced me to the world of ballet in a more educational way than just as a spectator.
El ballet siempre ha sido una pasión en mi vida, a pesar de que jamás lo he practicado, pero sÃ, puedo decir que soy una bailarina de ballet clásico frustrada 😖 siempre llamó mi atención sin embargo me enamoré de él demasiado tarde, cuando mi mamá y yo llevábamos a mi hermanita a sus clases de ballet. En esa época yo tenÃa unos 15 o 16 años y obviamente ya no podÃa formarme en esa disciplina, sin embargo siempre soñé con hacerlo, por más que no fuese de una manera profesional, pero en mi ciudad no solÃan dar clases para adultos o adolescentes, ahora sÃ, pero las lecciones son extremadamente caras, asà que solo me queda conformarme con ver este tipo de contenido en youtube y seguir a mis bailarinas clásicas favoritas como la rusa Natalia Osipova y la argentina Marianela Nuñez 🤗. No obstante, después de tanto consumir contenido de este tipo, el algoritmo de youtube me condujo a un par de canales que me han acercado al mundo del ballet de una manera más didáctica que espectadora.
I'm going to be as honest as possible with my opinion, but the first channel I want to tell you about is Lourdes de Freitas's. She's a Venezuelan girl who happens to be from my city, Valencia. I like her channel because she talks about ballet not only from a technical and artistic perspective, but also from a historical one, which is something that has always fascinated me. So, on her channel you'll find things like: when classical ballerinas started using pointe shoes, or where the most famous ballet plots come from, such as Giselle, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, or Swan Lake.
Voy a ser lo más sincera posible en mi opinión, el primer canal del que quiero hablarles es el de Lourdes de Freitas, una chica venezolana que precisamente es de mi ciudad, Valencia. Me gusta su canal porque ella habla del ballet no solo desde la parte técnica y artÃstica, sino también desde la historia, que es algo que siempre me ha apasionado, asà que en su canal encontrarás cosas como: Desde cuando las bailarinas clásicas comenzaron a usar las zapatillas de punta o de donde provienen las tramas más célebres del ballet como Giselle, El Cascanueces, El Quijote o el Lago de los Cisnes.
However, since nothing is perfect, there are just a couple of things I don't like about her (I told you I would be very honest), and that is that she usually uploads videos of the shows she has participated in, and in the last one, Giselle, she shared the lead role with another dancer, but she only uploaded her scenes, ignoring the other girl. I understand that it's her channel, but she had been talking about teamwork and ensemble work, and I really would have liked to see everyone's performance. I even told her so in a comment, and she replied that she didn't have the full video yet but would upload it at any moment (which never happened), so I had to go to the academy's Instagram to see the other scenes. She also has videos where she exaggerates her reactions to get attention and, of course, views, but as I said, nothing can be perfect, right? 😄 Anyway, I like most of her videos, and one in particular, where she explains the origin of the Willis, specters from Norse mythology that appear as ghosts of chaste women who died before marrying and who have been deceived by men, which is why they torment them and make them dance to death. These specters were magnificently included in the ballet Giselle.
Sin embargo como no todo es perfecto, hay solo un par de cosas que no me gustan de ella (les dije que serÃa muy honesta) y es que ella suele subir videos de los shows en los que ha participado y en el último, Giselle, ella compartÃa el rol principal con otra bailarina, sin embargo ella solo subió sus escenas, ignorando a la otra chica, entiendo que el canal es suyo, pero ella venÃa hablando del trabajo y el ensamble en equipo y de verdad me hubiese gustad ver el desempeño de todos, incluso se lo dije en un comentario y ella respondió que no tenÃa el video completo aún pero que en cualquier momento lo subirÃa, (algo que jamás ocurrió) asà que tuve que ir al Instagram de la academia para ver las demás escenas. También tiene videos donde exagera reacciones para llamar la atención y desde luego views, pero como les dije, nada puede ser perfecto, ¿cierto? 😄 de cualquier modo me gusta la mayorÃa de sus videos, y uno en particular, donde explica el origen de las Willis, espectros de la mitologÃa nórdica que se presentan como fantasmas de mujeres castas que murieron antes de casarse y que han sido engañadas por los hombres, por esta razón los atormentan y los hacen bailar hasta la muerte. Estos espectros fueron incluidos magnÃficamente en el ballet Giselle.
The second channel I love is called @Korydancer, and I actually like it even more. On it, the woman, who is not only a dancer but also a ballet director, mostly shares short vlogs about her days directing her team in the various shows they perform in. She also shows very interesting content about what happens behind the scenes, such as costume changes, hair styling, makeup, and even how the costumes are made. She also has very interesting videos about pointe shoes: which ones are ideal for each type of foot, how dancers should choose them when buying them, and how to use them correctly. She's even shown interesting videos about the protective gear that should be used to prevent as much damage as possible from friction.
El segundo canal que me encanta se llama @Korydancer, y de hecho me gusta más, en él, la chica, que no solo es bailarina sino que funge como directora de ballet nos muestra en su mayorÃa pequeños vlogs de lo que son sus jornadas dirigiendo a su equipo en los diversos shows a los que se presentan, aunque también muestra contenido muy interesante acerca de lo que sucede detrás del escenario como cambios de vestuario, peinado, maquillaje e incluso como confeccionan el vestuario. También tiene videos muy interesantes acerca de las puntas (zapatillas de puntas) cuál es la ideal para cada tipo de pie, como las bailarinas deben elegirlas a la hora de comprar y como se deben usar correctamente, incluso a mostrado videos interesantes acerca de las protecciones que se deben usar para evitar el mayor daño posible por la fricción.
But the videos I enjoy most from her are those that have allowed me to enjoy ballet more because they talk about the language of gestures in each work, so in this way you can enjoy each one of them more intensely by having a broader knowledge of what is happening on stage.
Pero los videos que más disfruto de ella son esos que me han permitido disfrutar más del ballet porque te hablan del lenguaje de gestos que hay en cada obra, asà que de esta manera ya se puede disfrutar de cada una de ellas con más intensidad al tener un conocimiento más amplio de lo que está ocurriendo en escena.
I know there are many other great channels I haven't discovered yet 😊 but I'm on the hunt for the perfect one to learn at least the basics of ballet from the comfort of my home.
