My Third Battle was a Success

For the next two weeks, I'm going to dip my toes to Modern battles instead of Frontier Mode. I want some skins and avatar wardrobe for this event so I would try my best until I get them and then get back to Frontier battles. I took some of my earnings from posting blogs and got some DEC so I could rent some good units to play. It was surprising for me because I forgot I had other cards as well from when I registered. I tried some matches today so I could do this post but will still play some more after I post this. I only have two weeks for the skins and wardrobe cosmetics so I've got to try my best and win in Modern battles. Embedded Image

Lineup:

There were no special modifiers in this battle which made it feel very clean and simple. With Standard rules only, I did not need to worry about strange ability changes or tricky positioning. High mana battles with Standard modifier like this battle usually let you bring your strongest units. I focused on building a full team where everyone can attack. I chose Water again because it is the element I understand the most right now and the one I think is the strongest. This choice might change though once I dabbled in other archons. I have yet to see all the units and think of the combos so I only rented a few for now.

Using Water Element in a high mana match feels comfortable because magic damage is increased by the archon. Since I already planned to use Marlai Singariel, I leaned into magic even more. I know this might not be the most creative way to play but consistency matters to me more at this stage. I wanted something reliable rather than risky since I am looking for wins than style points.

This is the lineup I used for the battle.

Embedded Image Marlai Singariel: Marlai Singariel is the main reason I went full magic. The +1 magic damage makes every magic unit feel more useful right away. When you stack many magic attackers, that bonus starts to feel very noticeable. I like using her because she rewards simple lineups that are easy to play. She fits my current playstyle since I am still learning and do not want to rely too much on complex tricks.

Embedded Image Port Guardian: My first choice was Port Guardian and is placed in front as my tank. I originally wanted Zargrul in front, but I noticed I had extra mana so I added Port Guardian instead. I use him a lot in Frontier Mode so he already feels familiar to me. He has good health and armor which makes him a good tank. I wanted multiple tanks up front while the rest of my team deals damage so I had Port Guardian followed by Zargrul.

Embedded Image Zargrul: This tank was a new unit I rented for this match. I mainly rented him because of Taunt. I really like how Taunt pulls attacks away from my backline units. The only issue I noticed is that he might need healing to last longer in other battles. For future matches, I think finding a healer for him would make this lineup much stronger.

Embedded Image Conclave Tracker: This is a unit I did not plan to add in the beginning. I honestly do not remember how I got him. I had some free packs early on when I registered my account so he might've came from there since I don't remember renting or buying this unit. Even so, she has magic damage so that alone made her usable with Marlai Singariel. Sometimes that is enough reason for me. She did his job nicely without needing any support and has much better stats than the other Frontier Mode unit so I added her as well.

Embedded Image Mystic Scaleweaver: One of my comfort units were added in this lineup. I use her a lot in Frontier Mode so bringing her here felt natural. The magic damage is good and the extra Slow ability helps my units attack first. She feels like a support unit that still contributes damage. I almost always include her when I can.

Embedded Image Captain Fellblade: She was another rental I wanted to try. I noticed she had Sneak and magic damage which reminded me of Saltwater Mage. I thought having two Sneak magic attack units could be a good strategy to pressure the enemy backline more. Also, her art looked cool, which honestly influenced my choice.

Embedded Image Saltwater Mage: The last unit and a unit I almost always use. Sneak plus magic damage feels very strong, especially when boosted by Marlai Singariel. Along with Captain Fellblade, she helps finish off backline units faster. I trust her a lot because she performs consistently in Frontier Mode so I wanted to use her as well in Modern battles. She feels like one of my core units at this point.

In this battle, I was able to make a strong team full of magic attack. Marlai Singariel can strengthen my magic attack units making them more deadlier. The enemy's attacks gets absorbed by Zargrul to help keep my team alive. Opportunity attacks from the enemy like from Moros Malik doesn't work when I have Taunt. With two units with Sneak, Saltwater Mage and Captain Fellblade, I were able to win quick even if the enemy has Nim Guard Captain with Void ability.

Why I Think My Lineup Works:

I think my lineup worked because every unit could attack. There were no wasted slots, which matters in any Splnterlands battles. Having Taunt helped protect my other units especially the ones who deals damage the most. That gave my magic units more time to stack damage.

Another reason this worked is the magic focus. Magic ignores armor and does not miss which makes it reliable. With Marlai Singariel boosting everyone, the damage added up fast. I think she is a strong choice fo any battles with magic damage units.

This lineup matched how I think about the game right now. I wanted some reliable and consistent damage over risky plays. I know this may not always work in the future but for now it fits my level. Until I understand more counters, and seen more units and combos with other elements, I will probably keep playing like this.
