Like the stages of a theater, journeys also suffer from that final act, that dreaded moment when the curtain falls and the audience, possessed by the spirit of Janus, the two-faced god, leaves the place, either exhilarated or, on the contrary, crestfallen, only to meet again, in the cold of yet another night shrouded in neon lights, in fetid sewer fumes, and in the frenzied roosters racing the dawn, with the harsh, and who knows, perhaps also blessed, reality.
We, like the Magi, also set sail for the East and bid a temporary farewell to the Numantine Highlands. Following Cavafy's suggestions, as we mentioned earlier, we can now say that we have postponed our journey as long as possible, and although old and weary, like the mythical Greek hero, we have reached our destination, arriving at the pinnacle of what is possibly the greatest and most surprising mystical and cultural center in the region: San Pedro Manrique.
San Pedro Manrique, despite the passage of time and the disappearance of many heritage landmarks, remains a truly invaluable center of ancestral wisdom, as evidenced by its ancient fire ritual, its Móndidas (a local tradition based on the legendary tribute of the Hundred Maidens), and above all, the unmistakable mark of the Templars, who must have been a stronghold in the area. This is demonstrated by the ruins of the now-defunct Convent of San Pedro el Viejo, the magnificent ruined Gothic church of San Miguel, adjacent to the cemetery, and the street whose name, La Rochela, recalls the French port of La Rochelle, where the Knights kept most of their powerful and mysteriously vanished fleet. In modern times, the Germans used this port as one of their main submarine bases, from which they dominated the turbulent waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Como los escenarios de un teatro, también los viajes adolecen de ese final de función, ese momento temido en el que baja el telón y el público, poseído por el espíritu de Jano, el dios de las dos caras, abandona el lugar, bien entusiasmado o por el contrario, cariacontecido, para volverse a reencontrar, en el frío de una noche más envuelta en luces de neón, en fétidos humores de alcantarilla y en enloquecidos tubos de escape echándole una carrera a los gallos de la madrugada, con la cruda y quién sabe, si quizás, también bendita realidad.
Nosotros, como los Magos, ponemos rumbo a Oriente también y le decimos temporalmente adiós a las Tierras Altas numantinas, ahora que, siguiendo las sugerencias de Cavafis, como ya apuntamos con anterioridad, podemos decir que hemos retrasado nuestro viaje cuanto hemos podido y aunque viejos y cansados, como el mítico héroe griego, hemos alcanzado nuestro destino, llegando a la cúspide del que posiblemente sea el mayor y más sorprendente foco mistérico y cultural de la zona: San Pedro Manrique.
San Pedro Manrique, a pesar del tiempo y la desaparición de no pocos hitos patrimoniales, continúa siendo un foco de sabiduría ancestral, realmente inestimable, como lo demuestra su milenario paso del fuego, sus Móndidas, basadas en el legendario tributo de las Cien Doncellas y sobre todo, la inequívoca huella de los templarios, que tuvieron que ser ciertamente fuertes en el lugar, como demuestran las ruinas del fenecido convento de San Pedro el Viejo, el maravilloso gótico arruinado de la iglesia de San Miguel, anexa al cementerio, así como esa calle, cuyo nombre, La Rochela, nos recuerda el puerto francés de La Rochelle, donde los caballeros tenían la mayor parte de su poderosa y misteriosamente desaparecida flota, que, en tiempos modernos, los alemanes utilizaron como una de las principales bases de submarinos, desde donde dominaron las impetuosas aguas del Océano Atlántico.
