Getting Started with Nostr: User Guide for Beginners

    Reblog

Welcome back to our 10-part series on Nostr! We've laid the groundwork: From the intro in "What It Is and Why It Matters," through its history in "Origins and Evolution," the tech breakdown in "How Nostr Works," and the decentralization edge in "Nostr vs. Centralized Social Media." Links: Post 1, Post 2, Post 3, Post 4. Now, it's time to get hands-on. If you're new, this guide walks you through setup without assuming tech expertise. We'll cover key generation, relay selection, client choices, and basic actions like posting and zapping. By the end, you'll be nostring (that's Nostr lingo for participating). Let's dive in—think of this as your Nostr onboarding packet.

Step 1: Understanding Your Nostr Identity – Generate a Key Pair

Your Nostr "account" is a cryptographic key pair, not a username/password. This gives you full control but means backing up is crucial—lose your private key, and you're locked out forever.

    • Why Keys? As explained in Post 3, the public key (npub) is your handle; the private key (nsec) signs posts for authenticity.

    • How to Generate:

      1. Visit a web tool like nostr-keyx.com or getAlby.com/nostr (Alby integrates Lightning for zaps).
      2. Click "Generate" – it'll create an npub (starts with "npub1...") and nsec (starts with "nsec1...").
      3. Copy both securely. Use a password manager like Bitwarden or write on paper for offline storage. Never share nsec!

Tip: For mobile, many clients generate keys during setup. Screenshot: Imagine a simple web form with "Public Key" and "Private Key" fields, plus a "Copy" button.

If you're in a privacy-focused region like Europe (e.g., Copenhagen's strong data laws), this key-based system aligns with GDPR principles—no personal data handed over.

Step 2: Choosing and Connecting to Relays

Relays are the servers that store and share your notes. Start with 3-5 for reliability.

    • Finding Relays: Use nostr.watch – filter by uptime, location, or paid/free. Popular ones in 2026: wss://relay.damus.io (general), wss://nos.lol (fast), wss://purplepag.es (paid for anti-spam).

    • How to Connect:

      1. In your chosen client (next step), look for "Relays" or "Settings."
      2. Add URLs like "wss://relay.primal.net."
      3. Test connection—good relays show "Connected" status.

Pro Tip: For redundancy, mix free and paid (pay with Lightning). If you're in Denmark, consider EU-based relays like wss://nostr.easydns.ca for lower latency.

Step 3: Picking a Client – Your Nostr App

Clients are the apps/interfaces for Nostr. No "official" one—choose based on device. As of January 2026, top picks:

    • Mobile (iOS/Android):

      • Damus (iOS): Clean, supports zaps. Download from App Store.
      • Amethyst (Android): Feature-rich, with media support. From Google Play or F-Droid.
      • Primal (cross-platform): Slick UI, built-in wallet for zaps.
    • Web/Desktop:

      • Snort.social: Browser-based, no install needed.
      • Coracle.social: Privacy-focused web client.
      • Iris.to: Desktop-friendly, with group chats.
    • Setup in a Client:

      1. Download/install (e.g., search "Damus" in App Store).
      2. On first launch, paste your nsec (or generate new).
      3. It auto-adds default relays; customize as above.
      4. Set profile: Add name, bio, picture (kind 0 event).

Screenshot: App home screen post-setup, showing profile edit with fields for "Display Name," "About," and "Picture URL."

Step 4: Basic Actions – Post, Follow, Zap

    Now, interact!

    • Posting a Note:

      1. Tap compose (usually a "+" icon).
      2. Write text (up to ~280 chars for short notes).
      3. Add tags: #hashtag or @npub for mentions.
      4. Hit "Publish" – it signs and sends to relays.
    • Following Users:

      1. Search npub or name (clients have search).
      2. View profile, tap "Follow."
      3. Your feed updates with their notes.
    • Zapping (Tipping):

      1. Setup a Lightning wallet (e.g., Alby extension or Wallet of Satoshi).
      2. On a note, tap lightning bolt.
      3. Enter sats (e.g., 21), send— instant tip!
    • Direct Messages:

      1. From profile, select "Message."
      2. Encrypted automatically (NIP-04).

    Troubleshooting Common Issues

    • No Feed? Check relay connections; add more.
    • Key Lost? Start over—Nostr is unforgiving.
    • Spam? Use clients with filters or paid relays.
    • Mobile Woes? iOS zaps might need Apple Pay setup; Android is more flexible.

    Why Start Now?

In 2026, with rising platform fatigue (e.g., X's algo tweaks), Nostr's simplicity empowers you. It's not overwhelming—start small, build your network.
